Team KTM adds another trophy to its collection

Press release by KTM USA

Team KTM HMC’s Kurt Nicoll continued his early-season roll, claiming a third consecutive podium finish in the Supermoto Unlimited class. Nicoll, who entered the weekend with a pair of second-place finishes to his name after missing the season opener, featured near the front once again, guiding his KTM 560SMR to a stellar third-place result.

Despite his absence in the opening weekend, the Unlimited champion of 2003 is quickly climbing the ranks in the class title race, now sitting in fifth position and only six points removed from the runner-up position.

Nicoll was followed to the checkered flag by his South African teammate, Brian Capper, as the Supermoto ace from Johannesburg picked up fourth place after pushing the British star throughout much of the 12-lap affair. Capper’s third fourth-place finish of the season also puts him in the championship mix, as he sits two points ahead of Nicoll in fourth place in the hunt.

Early in the contest it looked as if all three KTM HMC pilots would finish in order, but young gun Johnny Lewis crashed out of a potential fifth-place result while working lap 4.

Despite Lewis’ misfortune, KTM once again dominated the Unlimited race’s top ten, claiming seven of the available spots. The class’ current championship runner-up, BP Racing’s Josh Chisum, finished in sixth place, followed by Rockstar’s Travis Marks, KTMHUtt.com’s Cory Gabbert, Mark’s teammate Donald Wanat, and AJAX KTM’s Monte Frank, all aboard KTM 560SMRs.

Meanwhile, in the premier AMA Supermoto class, Australian Troy Herfoss enjoyed his second best run of the ’07 season, pushing his factory KTM 450SMR to a fine fourth despite being pit against a very deep field of Supermoto superstars. The up-and-coming Herfoss fought hard to remain in contention for the win but eventually found himself a lonely fourth in the 15-lap main event.

KTM also picked up a top-ten result in the Lites division as Red Baron Racing’s Steve Hatch took his KTM 250SX-F to ninth place in the class’ 12-lap final.
