Page 3 of 3 It is also easy to meet people anywhere motorcyclists congregate, and at rallies. That’s why I always recommend that you try to fit in a good rally each season. We’re off to the BMW rally next weekend. Astrid: Do you know anyone personally who had a tragic motorcycle accident? Christine: Unfortunately, yes. On our trip to Italy a few years back, one of the guests in our group (meaning not a formal member of the group), rode the wrong direction through a tunnel and had a head-on accident with a vehicle. He was killed in the accident. However, it was the collective opinion of all of us who had ridden with him, that he was riding too fast, and not observing safety measures. He did not have sufficient experience to be riding at the speeds at which he was riding, and was not routinely looking ahead. Astrid: Would it be fair to say riding a motorcycle is as much of a hobby as it is a life style? Christine: Yes, although I would term it a “serious hobby.” Astrid: What has been your basic philosophy since you became a rider? Christine: I would have to say: Ride at your own pace. I never ride faster than I feel safe, no matter whether I’m keeping up with the group or not. If you try to ride beyond your experience, you won’t enjoy the trip. Don’t be taunted into riding faster than you are comfortable. I always wear a helmet and protective clothing, and never drink and ride. NEVER.
